Is There a Business Cycle Effect on the Incidence of Dual Job Holding?

Abstract This paper examines the extent to which incidence of dual job holding is cyclically sensitive in context hours constraints on a worker’s weekly labor supply their main job. Random effects logit models probability are estimated separately for men and women each three mutually exclusive, hours-constrained regimes: overemployment, unconstrained hours, underemployment. As measured by deviation individual’s current regional unemployment rate from time-averaged mean rate, transitory business cycle movements have no effect holding. However, permanent/steady-state increase (decrease) local reduces (raises) among hours-unconstrained workers both males females. Furthermore, permanent employment contracts reduce likelihood having two jobs.
